The fonds consists of photographs taken during Achilles Schmid's travels down the Athabasca River in 1912. The photographs feature images of Athabasca Landing, limestone, First Nations, rapids, Athabasca Valley, a moose hunt, a portage, boat travel, an oil derrick, Pelican Rapids, tar sands, Fort McMurray, the Athabasca Oil Company, Hudson's Bay Company scows, dog teams, wintery landscapes, Calling Lake, a school house at Lac La Biche, the Northwest Mounted Police Station at Lac La Biche, and settlers of Lac La Biche. The fonds also includes photographs and negatives copied by the Provincial Archives of Alberta for the purpose of displaying the material in the Achilles Schmid fonds.

The fonds contains 14 negatives of “Indian Days” at Fort Macleod in 1919-1920, which show numerous people in uniform (soldiers and NWMP) and in various styles of Indigenous regalia. There are also five undated negatives of military personnel and aircraft and one undated negative of the Prince of Wales Hotel under construction in Waterton Park (likely 1927). All of the negatives were taken by Alexander Cochrane Wright.

The collection also includes an envelope for a 1931 photo order from McDermid Drug Co. Limited (of Calgary, Alberta), and a photograph of the attendees of the NWMP Veterans’ Annual Banquet, held in Calgary, AB in 1925. The banquet took place in the Hudson Bay Company store dining room. This photograph was taken by Collins & Gillies.

The fonds contains a manuscript for The Last Refuge by J.G. Nelson. The text is composed mainly of a historical study of Indigenous peoples in the Cypress Hills area of southern Alberta and Saskatchewan. The manuscript discusses history and settler activity in the area from 1690 onwards, and includes topics such as the Bow River Expedition, the fur trade, the decline of bison and beaver, NWMP and traders, and Fort Whoop Up. It includes text, maps, graphs and tables, and references to photographs and illustrations by Russell, Rindisbacher, Point, Remington, Ewers, Dawson, Hoffman, Audubon, and Wallace. The Last Refuge was first published in 1973.

Fonds consists of photographs and copies of photographs of P.C.H. Primrose during his career with the Northwest Mounted Police and as Lieutenant-Governor. It also consists of other material related to his post as Lieutenant-Governor including a bible and letters patent appointing him Lieutenant-Governor of Alberta.

The fonds also includes two photographs that hung on the walls of the Primrose family home. The first of these images is a black and white photograph depicting Charles Coursolles McCaul sitting in a study with a dog, signed by McCaul with the following note, “Merry Xmas, 1918.” McCaul worked as an attorney largely out of Edmonton. The second image is a black and white image of a First Nation man holding an antler-handled walking stick and wearing a Treaty medal.

The fonds consists of photographs taken by Hugo Viewegar and his son, Lute Vieweger. Of particular note are nine autochromes, 1913 - 1914, taken by Hugo Viewegar. The autochrome is a very rare early colour photographic process. The originals are 5"X7" and 3 1/2"X5" transparencies on glass plates. Copy negatives and prints have been produced from the fragile originals by the Provincial Archives of Alberta as reference copies. The subject matter is native people, Royal North West Mounted Police (RNWMP), family portraits, a house and a still life, all taken in Edmonton. Also by Hugo Viewegar are nine black and white photographs and four black and white negatives, 1913 - 1914, of homesteading, RNWMP, the City of Edmonton paddle steamer, and Edmonton scenes. Two of the prints are vintage albumen prints (RNWMP). The remainder are modern prints. Also included are five black and white photographs and four black and white negatives, [193-], by Lute Vieweger, of riverboats, airplanes and Fort Chipewyan. All five prints are modern prints. Also included is an audio reel recording of an interview with Lute Vieweger about his life, recorded in 1974.
