Admission to LLM

We are pleased to accept applications to our LLM program until December 15th in the year prior to admission. All applicants admitted to the program will be considered for fellowships; no separate application is required.

Please note, applications are not reviewed until after the deadline.

Minimum requirements

Minimum Requirements for All Prospective Students

All prospective LLM students must satisfy the general admission requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies .

In addition, all prospective students must hold:

• a JD or LLB from a recognized university; or
• a relevant non-law degree

All prospective LLM students must also have:

• a demonstrated English language proficiency (Eg. Minimum TOEFL internet-based score of 100)
• a minimum 3.0 GPA in the last two years of full-time university study.

Thesis-Based or Course-Based LLM

Additional entrance requirements into the Master of Laws (LLM) program vary depending on whether students are applying for the course-based LLM or the thesis-based LLM.

Statement of Intent (for all applicants)

The statement of intent should be no more than 2 pages double-spaced and must include the following:

• a brief description of the area of legal study (1 para)
• how an LLM will help you achieve your career or academic goals (1-2 paras)
• what steps you have taken to ensure you are prepared to engage in intensive research and academic writing at an advanced level of legal graduate studies (1-2 paras)
• how an LLM undertaken at the University of Manitoba will assist you in advancing your goals (1-2 paras)
• what resources and research expertise at the University of Manitoba will help you achieve your goals (1-2 paras)

Proposal (for thesis-based LLM students only)

The Proposal should be no more than 3-4 pages and must include the following:

• a description of the area of law or legal study you intend to pursue including the specific area of legal concentration or specialization you are proposing to pursue (1 page)
• proposed research topic including a thesis statement or specific research question(s)
• your method for answering the research question(s); if you are planning on doctrinal analysis, explain which research resources will be of most use to you.
• explain how you are experienced or educated in your proposed research area
• the original contribution of your project to legal research
• the impact your work will have on the discipline

CV

The CV should include the following:

• what you are doing presently (school, work, etc.)
• your standing in your law degree or law-adjacent degree (i.e. quartile, percentile, ranking etc.)
• education history (list all degrees completed and dates, degrees undertaken but not completed, and expected date of completion)
• work history including professional certifications
• academic awards, prizes or scholarships or other achievements
• extra-curricular activities while in law school or undergraduate studies
• publications if any

Recommendation Letters

Thesis-Based LLM:

Three letters of recommendation are required. If possible, two of the recommendation letters should be from academics. One letter of recommendation may be from an employer.

Course-Based LLM:

Three letters of recommendation are required. Letters may be from academics or professionals as appropriate.

Cost of attendance

Tuition Fee: $12,995.24
